Current Students

Scholarships for current students are awarded by Southwestern University colleges, schools, programs and organizations, as well as affiliated groups. Criteria vary and include, but may not be limited to, academic major, geographical location, academic achievement, and financial need. 

Continuing Scholarships

  • Earl Lee Moseley, Jr. Scholarship

    Candidates must have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA and completed at least 80% of all credit hours attempted in their Southwestern coursework. Awarded on the basis on financial need.

    J. Charles Merrill Peace and Justice Scholarship

    For this scholarship, preference will be given to students who have completed at least two years of full-time enrollment, are pre-ministerial students, and/or who have demonstrated interest in activities or occupations which promote peace and justice locally, nationally or globally. Furthermore, preference may be given to students who are members of the United Methodist Church.

    Amount: $3,000 for one year

    Alpha Phi Omega Scholarship

    Candidates must have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA and completed at least 80% of all credit hours attempted in their Southwestern coursework. Awarded on the basis on financial need.

  • Pre-Law Scholarships

    Candidates for these scholarships must be pursuing a course of study in preparation for Pre-Law, with the intent of enrolling in law school after graduation from Southwestern University.  Contact Tish Owen (Financial Aid, 512-863-1259, owent@southwestern.edu) for more information.  

    Judge Richard Critz & Robert H. Purl Pre-Law Scholarship

    Candidates must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and completed at least 80% of all credit hours attempted in their Southwestern coursework. Awarded on the basis of merit (Critz) and financial need (Purl).

    Pre-Med Scholarships

    Candidates for these scholarships must be pursuing a course of study in preparation for medical school, with the intent of enrolling in medical school after graduation from Southwestern University. Students planning to enroll in dental school are ineligible for these scholarships.     M.D. Anderson Pre-Med Scholarship

    Candidates must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA in their Southwestern coursework. Awarded on the basis of merit and not financial need.

    Amount: Variable, up to $4,000

    Turner Caldwell Scholarship

    Candidates must have at least a 3.7 cumulative GPA in their Southwestern coursework and must be entering their senior year. Awarded on the basis of merit and not financial need.

    Dr. John W. Foster Pre-Med Excellence

    This scholarship is competitive and is awarded on the basis of merit and financial need. Recipients who also receive need-based financial aid will have this scholarship incorporated into their need-based financial aid package. Students must be making satisfactory academic progress for financial aid purposes (i.e., 2.0 cumulative GPA, completed at least 80% of all credit hours attempted, and earned no more than 175 credit hours.)

    Business Scholarships

    Kemper Scholars Program

    Candidates for this scholarship program must be in their first year of enrollment at Southwestern with an interest in exploring careers in administration or and/or Business.  Unusually mature students with broad interests and a record of academic achievement, extracurricular activity, community service, and leadership ability are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will have a commitment to the liberal arts and will maintain at least a 3.00 grade point average.

    Kemper Scholars are required to participate in paid program of work for a major non-profit organization in Chicago during the summer following their sophomore year.  In addition, each Kemper Scholar will participate in a summer independent project or internship in the summer following their junior year.

    Study Abroad Scholarships

    Lokey Scholarship & Kahler Scholarship

    Southwestern maintains two scholarship funds: the Lokey Scholarship for Study Abroad and the Kahler Scholarship. The Lokey Scholarship is reserved for summer study abroad programs. Awards range from $200 - $500 and are made on the basis of academic merit and financial need. The Kahler Scholarship provides awards for semester and year-long study abroad. These awards are made primarily on the basis of financial need. Kahler awards typically range from $1,000 - $3,500. Contact the Office of Intercultural Learning for application information.

    Alumni Relations Scholarships

    Greater Austin Association Scholarship

    A scholarship for students who have financial need, minimum 3.0 GPA, and whose permanent home address is in one of the following counties (Bastrop, Blanco, Caldwell, Fayette, Hays, Lee, Llano, and Travis).

    Hatton W. Sumners Foundation Scholarships

    Amount: Variable, up to $5,000 per semester for four semesters ($20,000 total)

    The Hatton W. Sumners Foundation Scholarships at Southwestern University are available for current sophomores (who will be juniors in the fall of 2017).  Four new Sumners Scholars will be named for the year.  Students who are pursuing a pre-law path, and/or students majoring in political science, history, or education (elementary or secondary Social Studies focus) are eligible to apply.  To maintain the scholarship, students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average in a qualified major at the conclusion of each semester, carry at least 12 semester hours, and remain in “good standing” with the University. Eligible students should be U.S. citizens, full-time students, and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

    Candidates must have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA and completed at least 80% of all credit hours attempted in their Southwestern coursework. Awarded on the basis on financial need.

    Alpha Xi Delta Stephanie Quimby Memorial Scholarhip

    Candidates must have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA and completed at least 80% of all credit hours attempted in their Southwestern coursework. Awarded on the basis of leadership.

    Kappa Sigma Iota/Lori & Erik Harpst  Scholarship

    Candidates must have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA and completed at least 80% of all credit hours attempted in their Southwestern coursework. Awarded on the basis on financial need.

    Ouida Henderson/Allison Dickson Scholarship (Delta Delta Delta)

    Candidates must have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA and completed at least 80% of all credit hours attempted in their Southwestern coursework. Awarded on the basis on financial need.

    Gabe W. Lawson & Phi Delta Theta Scholarship

    Candidates must have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA and completed at least 80% of all credit hours attempted in their Southwestern coursework. Awarded on the basis on financial need.

    Nell Barnes Benold ’48 & Zeta Tau Alpha Scholarship

    Candidates must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and completed at least 80% of all credit hours attempted in their Southwestern coursework. Awarded on the basis on financial need.

    The Zeta Chapter-Alpha Delta Pi Scholarship

    Candidates must have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA and completed at least 80% of all credit hours attempted in their Southwestern coursework. Awarded on the basis on financial need.

    Kappa Alpha Scholarship

    Candidates must have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA and completed at least 80% of all credit hours attempted in their Southwestern coursework. Awarded on the basis on financial need.

  • A number of both need and merit based scholarships are available through a variety of Methodist organizations. Each award has its own eligibility requirements and deadlines, so be sure to contact the Financial Aid Office with any questions. 

    General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) Scholarships 

    An online scholarship application must be submitted directly to GBHEM in order to be considered for the J. A. Knowles Memorial Scholarship and the United Methodist Scholarship, which were formerly awarded through the Southwestern University United Methodist Scholarship Application.

    J. A. Knowles Memorial Scholarship 

    Candidates must be a full-time degree seeking student at Southwestern, and must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. Applicants must file a FAFSA and demonstrate financial need. Requires a minimum GPA of 2.5 to be considered.

    Amount: $500 to $5,000 for one year
    Application deadline: March 1

     

    United Methodist Scholarship

    Candidates must be a full-time degree seeking student at Southwestern, and must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. Requires a minimum GPA of 2.5 to be considered. Applicants must be an active, full member of the United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application.  

    Amount: $500 to $5,000 for one year
    Application deadline: March 1

     

    United Methodist Higher Education Foundation

    United Methodist Dollars for Scholars 

    Candidates must be a full-time degree seeking student at Southwestern. Requires a minimum GPA of 2.5 to be considered. Applicants must be an active, full member of the United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application.  

    Amount: $3000 to $4000 for one year

     

    Pre-Ministerial Scholarship

    Pre-Ministerial Scholarships are available for students who plan to enter full-time ministry and participation in the Southwestern Pre-Ministry Connection organized by the University Chaplain.  Candidates should speak with the University Chaplain prior to submitting a Pre-Ministerial Scholarship application.

    Amount:  Up to $10,000 per year

Outside Scholarships

Outside scholarships, also known as private scholarships, are not managed or administered by Southwestern, but by outside entities. Although Southwestern does not award these funds, federal, state, and Southwestern University policies require that the University use outside scholarships as a source of financial aid. If you have been awarded an outside scholarship, please complete our Outside Scholarship Declaration Form.

  • The My Best Hosting Review Scholarship Opportunity 

    The purpose of this scholarship is to offer financial assistance to college students without the necessary financial means, but with the appropriate amount of determination to go to a college that can change their path in life for the better.

    Eligibility:

    • Must be enrolled full-time at an accredited two-year or four-year university, community college or junior college, or a graduate degree program.
    • This scholarship is offered nationwide to United States citizens.
    • Students must be in academic “Good Standing” and have a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher to be eligible.

    Austin Community Foundation Scholarship List

    In order to be considered for any scholarship listed below, students must complete a general application. Our general application is an efficient way for students to apply for scholarships and allows students to be matched to certain scholarships, and recommended for other scholarships. The scholarships that are recommended to the student require supplemental information.

    The Planet of Baseball is your one-stop resource for all things related to baseball and softball.  We love the game of baseball and want to foster the growth of this sport in young men, women and children, so we are thrilled to announce the launch of the Planet of Baseball Scholarship Program.

    Eligibility:

    Details:

    Current or future (next year) students (of any year) are eligible for the scholarship. The $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to one student and the money will be transferred to their University’s bank account to cover the tuition fee.

    Eligibility:

    • This scholarship is only for students who are presently enrolled in colleges, universities or high schools.

    Eligibility Requirements:

    • Applicants must be a current college student, or anyone planning on attending college (or another form of higher education), in the upcoming school year.

    SmileTutor Quarterly College Student Scholarship

    As part of our commitment to contribute back to society and improve the education of students all over the world, we are offering a quarterly student scholarship for all college students who are currently enrolled or enrolling within one calendar year to a national or international university. 

    Eligibility

    Only graduating seniors in high school, freshmen and sophomores in college between the ages of 16 and 22 are eligible to win.

    Eligibility: Any legal U.S. resident at least eighteen (18) years old who meets one of the following criteria:

    CJ Pony Parts Scholarship

    Eligibility:

    GamingScan Scholarship

    Calling out all student gamers and gaming enthusiasts all over the world! GamingScan is giving out $1500 through our Annual Gamer’s Scholarship Program. We want to reward a student who can make an impact by writing a piece about gaming.

    Important Notes: 

    • Application is free and open to all students from any country.
    • Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Your submitted essay will be scanned by a plagiarism checker application and double-checked by our evaluators.
    • We are strict about the admission slip requirement to ensure that the applicant is indeed an enrolled student. Likewise, we will not accept application of previous winners of the Annual Gamer’s Scholarship.

    National Debt Relief Scholarship

    Eligibility:

    • The applicants must be enrolled in an accredited 4-year university or college located in United States.
    • Graduate and undergraduate students can apply
    • Graduating high school seniors with a GPA of 3.0 or above are also eligible to apply for the scholarship.
    • Applicants must be pursuing or intending to pursue their bachelor’s degree which can be in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

    EasyEDA Electronic Engineering Communication Scholarship

    EasyEDA is a great web-based EDA aiming to help electronic engineers, students, hobbyists to take their design from idea to reality with providing comprehensive data and collaboration tools for electronic design.

  • Jungle Scout Scholarship

    The Jungle Scout team is excited to announce a new charitable initiative – offering scholarships to students in the US who are studying in business, entrepreneurship and computer science related fields.

  • Howell & Christmas, LLC Visionary Scholarship

    Steinger, Iscoe & Greene Law Scholarship for Child Advocates

    The law firm of Steinger, Iscoe & Greene dedicates a large part of our practice to helping families who have faced child abuse in any form. We know that many future lawyers also hope to champion this cause, and we are pleased to offer a semi-annual $1,000 scholarship for a child advocate or abuse survivor seeking a law degree.

    Eligibility:

    • You have personally worked to protect children’s rights or stop abuse either as a volunteer, as a counselor, in your professional work or by legal means.
    • You are an abuse survivor who wishes to use your own experiences to help others.

  • Bella Ballroom Excellence in Performing Arts Scholarship

    In order to further Bella Ballroom’s mission to provide opportunities to young, emerging artists, we are proud to sponsor an annual scholarship contest. This contest is open to current U.S. undergraduate students. The winner will receive a one-time $1,000 scholarship.

    Eligibility:

    • Must be currently enrolled with an accredited U.S. college, university, or trade school.
    • Must be a current undergraduate majoring in dance, theater, music, performing arts or related field.
    • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0

  • Margaret McNamara Education Scholarship

    Eligibility Requirements:

    • Be at least 25 years old at time of application deadline (see specific regional program application below);
    • Be a national of a country listed on the MMEG Country Eligibility List;
    • Be enrolled at an accredited academic institution when submitting application; and plan to be enrolled for a full academic term after award of the grant by the Board;
    • Not be related to a World Bank Group, International Monetary Fund or Inter-American Development Bank staff member or spouse;
    • already be enrolled as a full time student, with relevant student visa in national passport, and plan to continue studying full time in the following academic year;
    • not hold US citizenship or permanent residency (green card) or Canadian citizenship or Canadian landed immigrant status

    Medothego.com Women Driving Innovation Scholarship

    Though great strides have been made in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, also called STEM, these fields still remain largely dominated by men.     Eligibility:

    All Women in Media - DFW Scholarship

    In 1960, the Alliance for Women in Media became the first professional broadcasting organization to establish an educational foundation. Our mission is to utilize the media to create positive change. The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation supports educational programs, charitable activities, public service campaigns and scholarships to benefit the public, the media and allied fields.

    Eligibility:

    • 1. Candidate must have completed 75 hours of college course work by December 2016.
    • 2. Candidate may be male or female.
    • 3. An overall grade point average of 3.25 or 3.0 in declared major course work is required (based on a 4.0 scale).
    • 4. Candidate must be currently enrolled as a full-time student (carrying a minimum of 12 hours per semester) with a declared major in radio, television, film, public relations, advertising/communications or broadcasting.

  • VeteranAid.org 2017 Veterans Benefit Scholarship

    VeteranAid.org, the leading online resource for information on veterans’ Aid & Attendance pension benefit, is proud to announce our second annual scholarship for advancement in higher education. This is a general scholarship which will award each of the selected applicants with a scholarship award of $2,000. This scholarship will be awarded to students enrolled in an accredited certificate program, college or university during the academic year.

    Eligibility:

    • The annual scholarship award is to three (3) students enrolled in a certificate program, associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree or graduate level program at an accredited 2-year college or 4-year university during the 2017-2018 academic year.

    Medals of America Scholarship Competition 2017

    We are delighted to provide assistance through our Civil Service/Political Science/ History Scholarship for active duty and veteran students continuing their education. Upon the contest’s completion, one applicant will be selected as recipients of a scholarship of $1,000. 

    Eligibility:

    • U.S. Citizen (or permanent resident).
    • Enrolled (or enrolling) as full time student of accredited college/university within the U.S., for completion of undergraduate degree in Political Science, History, or equivalent.
    • Current Active Duty members and their dependents or any Veteran and their direct descendants (children, grandchildren, etc)

    Kronzek Firm: Operation Veteran Education Scholarship

    Eligibility:

    • Be accepted into or currently attending an accredited college or university (including technical schools)
    • Be able to provide a copy of your DD-214, NAVPERS form or WD AGO to prove you are a veteran who was Honorably Discharged, received an Entry Level Separation or received a Clemency Discharge with a Certificate of Completion, or are otherwise in good standing with the military.

    • The legal child (natural or adoptive) of a disabled veteran of any branch of U.S. military service who is either a:
      • U.S. high school senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.0. or
      • U.S. student currently attending or enrolled in an accredited community college, undergraduate, or graduate degree program, with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.

    Ann Rogers was the Director of Social Studies for the Texas Education Agency for ten years. She spent her years in that position championing the needs of social studies teachers across the state of Texas. This scholarship was created to honor Ann Rogers and her vision of the teaching of social studies in Texas.

    • For a student teacher, doing his/her student teaching in social studies in the state of Texas.
    • $1,000.00 scholarship paid directly to the student.
