Bio: Originally from the Rio Grande Valley, Amalia Merino is a first-generation graduate who received a B.A. in Linguistics and Spanish in 2017 before completing a M.A. in Hispanic Linguistics in 2020 from the University of Texas at Austin. Currently, she is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Texas at Austin and is in the final writing phase of her doctoral dissertation, expecting to defend it in Spring 2024. Self-identified as a proud Latina, Amalia was excited to join Southwestern University as the Hispanic Student Success Coordinator in June 2023 where she assists students of Hispanic and Latin American heritage achieve academic, professional, and personal success.
