New Student Welcome Programs - Fall 2020

Mosaic is excited to welcome all first-year and transfer students to the Southwestern community. Whether you are joining us for in-person programs or you’ll be tuning in away from campus, we want you to feel safe, supported, and engaged during the fall semester. Our welcome programs offer in-person and virtual opportunities for you to build community and ease your transition into college life at SU.

The following programs are just the beginning — Mosaic & the Residential Experience provide workshops, presentations, and activities all throughout the year to support your holistic development.

Clean Your Space to Keep You Safe (Virtual)

Tuesday, September 8th @ 5-6pm

Keeping your personal spaces clean is more important now than ever because of COVID-19. Join us to learn about how to properly clean your space to minimize risk. We’ll discuss the importance of creating a cleaning schedule, appropriate products to use, clean, and how to talk to your roommates to create boundaries and hold each other accountable. This event will help you develop 21st-century skills and construct a well-managed life.

Mosaic Reflections

Wednesday, September 9th @ 6-7pm in Mabee Atrium and Ruter Lounge

Thursday, September 10th  @ 6-7pm in BC Lounge and Clark Lounges

Saturday, September 12th @ 2-3pm in Mabee Atrium and Ruter Lounge

Saturday, September 12th @ 3:30-4:30pm in Clark and Brown-Cody Lounges

Mosaic encourages you to mindfully reflect on your experiences and take an active role in your development. What have you discovered about yourself that you didn’t know yesterday? What are the most important skills you need to be successful in college? What shapes your identity? How can you make a positive difference in the world? How will these new ideas help you make the most of your time at Southwestern?

Join the student Mosaic Ambassadors to explore these questions and more through a variety of fun and interactive activities.

RSVP is required for in-person programs; 10 seats are available per residence hall.

  • You may only RSVP for and attend programs in the residence hall in which you reside.
  • RSVPs open at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, September 7th; the link will be posted in the Campus Notices daily email.

All new students are welcome to attend the virtual event, no matter where you live.

Empower Yourself - Be an Active Bystander! (Virtual)

Monday, September 14th @ 12:30-1:30pm

Have you ever heard or saw something that just didn’t seem right? What did you do?  Do you wish you would have done something differently?

During this interactive workshop, Mosaic Ambassadors will discuss how we all can play an active role in recognizing harmful situations in our personal, professional, and academic lives. You will learn about the bystander effect, as well as a wide spectrum of harm that impacts students and members of our community including high-risk drinking, violence, sexual misconduct, mental health concerns, hazing, harassment, and many behaviors that may be expressions of racism, ableism, transphobia, and other forms of system oppression. We will also engage in a dialogue about intervention resources that are available both on and off campus.

Using the Hollaback! “5 D’s of Bystander Intervention” (Direct, Distract, Delegate, Delay, Document), you will learn how to empower yourself to take action when you see or hear harm in our community.

Mosaic Meetup

Thursday, September 17th @ 4:30-5:30pm

Entering college alongside hundreds of classmates can be overwhelming. By participating in the Mosaic Meetup, you can start your experience at Southwestern with plenty of support.

Mosaic Meetups is a weekly program that guides new students through their first semester of college using the Mosaic approach. This program seeks to empower students to intentionally engage in experiences beyond the classroom and actively reflect on the meaning and value of those experiences. Each week, we will engage in a variety of activities that will introduce you to important resources and opportunities across campus — all of which will encourage you to develop holistically.

This is an 11-week program and is limited to 15 students. Sign ups will be available after the first day of the fall semester.

Virtual Speed-Friending

Saturday, September 19th @ 2-3:30pm

We may be physical distancing, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be social! Join our virtual hangout to meet other first-years who share your passions, interests, and hobbies. Maybe you’ll find your new best friends! You’ll have opportunities to answer fun questions and make meaningful connections by engaging with your peers in small breakout rooms. Let’s build our Southwestern community together! This event will help you shape identity.

*This event will also be held on October 3rd.
