Laura Merrill is the Assistant to the Episcopal Office of the Rio Texas Conference of The United Methodist Church, having previously served as the superintendent of the conference’s El Valle District.  During her career, Rev. Merrill has served in various of the church’s Hispanic/Latino ministries at both the national and conference levels. She is a former member of the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women and of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry and currently serves on the Texas Methodist Foundation board.  She was an elected delegate to the 2012 and 2016 General Conferences of the United Methodist Church.

Laura graduated from Southwestern in 1984 with a degree in international studies. After graduating, she served the UMC’s General Board of Global Ministries as a mission intern and missionary in Concepción, Chile, and Tucson, Arizona. In 1995 she earned her master’s degree, summa cum laude, from Emory’s Candler School of Theology, where she was elected to the Omicron Delta Kappa and Theta Alpha Kappa honor societies. For a time she served as Candler’s assistant to the dean and director of communications.
