Established in 1994 by the William A. and Madeline Welder Smith Foundation of Houston, Texas, to recognize three outstanding members of the University community: the late John Diaz, a Physical Plant employee from 1956 to 1971; Ernesto Nieto, Class of 1964, founder of the National Hispanic Institute, and 1994 Distinguished Alumnus; and Dr. Vicente Villa, holder of the Lillian Nelson Pratt Chair in Science and 1993 CASE U. S. Professor of the Year. The scholarship will be awarded to junior and senior students of Hispanic heritage who are in good standing and who have provided service and leadership to the Southwestern community.
