Carol Herder Carol Herder is a retired banking professional, having served as a vice president at Allied Bank of Texas, where she created its equipment leasing department.  Prior to joining Allied Bank, Ms. Herder was a commercial loan officer, vice president of the leasing department, and executive vice president of several tax-oriented subsidiaries at Texas Commerce Bank.  Currently, she is an independent civic and social organization professional.

Ms. Herder’s family history is deeply intertwined with that of Southwestern.  Her great-grandfather, Dr. Claude Carr Cody, was a beloved Southwestern professor of mathematics for 37 years who served as Southwestern’s first academic dean and as the university’s acting president on two separate occasions.  Another great-grandfather, Melville Beveridge Lockett, served on Southwestern’s board of trustees for 27 years, chairing the board’s executive committee for a dozen of those years.  In 1910, Dr. Cody and Mr. Lockett were instrumental in ensuring that Southwestern remained in Georgetown when its president wanted to relocate the school to Dallas.  Dr. Cody’s three sons and Mr. Lockett’s five daughters all graduated from Southwestern. 

Ms. Herder currently serves on the boards of the Shepherd Society of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, the Special Outreach Fund of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, and Gospel Boxes Ministry.  She is a past president of the Kappa Alpha Theta Alumnae Club of Houston, past regent of the John McKnitt Alexander Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, past co-president of the Parents’ Association of the Kinkaid School, and past co-chairman of the Memorial Hermann Hospital annual gala.  She is a sustaining member of the Junior League of Houston and a past recipient of its Volunteer of the Year award.

Carol earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism with honors and an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin in 1972 and 1974, respectively.  Prior to her election to the board of trustees, she served as a member of Southwestern’s board of visitors.
