Jazz Band 

A veteran of the Philly and Detroit Jazz scenes, saxophonist Dave Sayers has played professionally across the United States, Canada, and Europe. He has enjoyed the privilege of performing with the Florida Orchestra and Ann Arbor Symphony, at the renowned Ford Montreux-Detroit Jazz Festival, and alongside iconic artists Ella Fitzgerald, The Temptations, and Chubby Checker. He currently plays with local Austin bands Uptown Drive, Buzz and the Blue Cats, and the Matt Wilson Band. His recordings include Bingo, recorded with Bird of Paradise Jazz Orchestra, and Misfit, his debut album with the Dave Sayers Quartet which was praised by Cadence Magazine as a “fresh, compelling album.” Previously an instructor at the University of Michigan and The University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Sayers joined the Southwestern Music faculty in 2017 as a Part-time Assistant Professor teaching Jazz Theory and Saxophone. Since then he has had the pleasure of instructing the Southwestern Jazz Band and directing their widely popular biannual concerts. Dr. Sayers earned his B.M. from the University of South Florida and his M.M. from the University of Michigan, studying under esteemed musicians Andrew Bishop, Ellen Rowe, Edward Serath and Donald Sinta. He recently received his D.M.A. from The University of Texas at Austin under the guidance of saxophonist Dr. John Mills.
