Maha Zewail-Foote

Garey Chair and Professor of Chemistry Maha Zewail-Foote published an article “Using Student-Centered Approaches to Teach the Biochemistry of SARS-CoV-2” in the journal Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education.The article discusses pedagogical approaches to enhance science literacy and model authentic science inquiry in biochemistry. This same learning framework was used when the class quickly shifted to learning about the biochemistry of SARS-CoV-2 last spring.

Garey Chair and Professor of Chemistry Maha Zewail-Foote published an article in the Journal of Chemical Education on transitioning her biochemistry lab class to a remote format. She described the assignments she created that maintained the research learning objectives of the course and enhanced research skills as well as the community outreach project, Making a Difference, that she developed for the class.

Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Maha Zewail-Foote recently published an article on using computer simulations to teach chemical kinetics in the journal Trends in Chemistry. Southwestern graduate Jace Venters ’13 is a coauthor on this paper.

Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Maha Zewail-Foote was invited to give a research seminar at New England Biolabs, Inc., a recognized world leader in developing innovative products for the life-science industry, including genomic research.

Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Maha Zewail-Foote was invited to give two oral presentations at the American Chemical Society national meeting in Boston. One presentation focused on using a computer simulation to teach chemical kinetics to undergraduate students. The other presentation highlighted her research on unique DNA structures and their biological functions.
