Dr. Fumiko Futamura, along with her colleagues Marc Frantz of Indiana University Bloomington and Dr. Annalisa Crannell of Franklin and Marshall College presented a minicourse entitled Visualizing Projective Geometry Through Photographs and Perspective Drawings at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Diego in January 2013.

Topics included visualizing Desargues’ theorem through shadows and pinhole cameras, finding harmonic sets in two point perspective drawings, using the harmonic set to find the vanishing point given limited information in a photograph and identifying the cross-ratio and Casey’s angle in photos of Target.

The minicourse was well attended, with 36 professors, high school teachers and artists registered from 17 different states and 3 countries.
