Members of the Friends of the Sarofim School of Fine Arts were treated to a lecture and dinner on Thursday November 8, 2012, themed around ancient Chinese culture.

Dr. Allison Miller, assistant professor of art history, presented her lecture, entitled ‘Rewriting China’s Artistic Past: Exploring the Royal Tomb Treasures of Han China’.

The rapid pace of China’s recent development has led to the discovery of vast treasures in salvage excavations across China over the past three decades. Professor Miller will discuss her research on these recent discoveries from tombs dating to the first and second centuries BC, a critical period in the history of one of the world’s great civilizations.

Miller discussed pieces like the Jade Dragon Pendant (right), Western Han Dynasty (202 BC-8 AD), which was unearthed from the tomb of the king of Chu at Shizishan, Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province. Height: 17.3 cm, Width: 10.5 cm

Friends members had the opportunity to view the Asian Calligraphy exhibit (the gallery remained open late that night, until 6pm) beforehand. The lecture commenced at 6:00, followed by a lovely dinner in the lobby of the Olin building.
