“My initial interest in classical studies began in seventh grade, when I first started taking Latin. At the time, I had no idea that this ancient language would ultimately become a source of fascination for me and a topic of study that I would continue to pursue through college. As I took advanced Latin courses in high school and attended conventions sponsored by the National Junior Classical League (definitely the highlight of my summers), my love for Latin became even more evident. When I started applying to colleges, I knew that I wanted to major in Biology - my other passion. However, I hated the thought that Latin would no longer be such an integral part of my life. I desperately wanted to continue my upper level studies of the language and have the opportunity to take other courses relating to ancient civilization and ancient Greek.  One of the main reasons that I came to Southwestern was because I knew that in its liberal arts environment - with small class sizes and close connections forged between teachers and students - I would be able to complete the undergraduate education that I wanted as a double major.

“While balancing the course work of a double major in Biology and Classics has certainly been difficult at times, my experience overall has been extremely fulfilling. I have been able to dedicate time and energy towards two disciplines that I care immensely for, without feeling the pressure to “just choose one!” For my first four semesters at Southwestern, I was able to expand my classical knowledge by taking ancient Greek. My exposure to ancient Greek culture and civilization in those classes heightened my curiosity and ultimately led to my interest in studying abroad in Greece.”
