Southwestern University is proud to announce a partnership with Barnes & Noble to operate the campus bookstore beginning in the fall of 2024. Through the transformative collaboration, America’s largest bookseller is also bringing their First Day® Complete program to Southwestern.

In addition to selling course textbooks, the retailer will also offer a variety of Southwestern merchandise. Barnes & Noble is expected to bring a new, more robust selection of Southwestern- and Pirate-branded apparel, spirit gear, memorabilia, school supplies, and more to campus.

As part of the transition to Barnes & Noble, a new storefront will open this fall in a renovated space on the first floor of the Red & Charline McCombs Campus Center. The prime location will provide enhanced visibility and accessibility for the campus community and visitors while helping expand Southwestern’s brand.

Barnes & Noble has pledged a commitment to continuously engage with the SU community. The bookseller has vast experience with student, faculty, and staff engagement at campuses across the country through gameday pop-up shops and presence at major on-campus events, such as Homecoming, Family Weekend, and Commencement. Barnes & Noble is dedicated to hosting special events and fostering open communication by regularly distributing feedback surveys and collaborating with advisory committees to ensure they meet the evolving needs of the SU community.

“We are thrilled to enter into this partnership with Barnes & Noble,” Southwestern Vice President for Finance and Administration Lenora Chapman said. “Barnes & Noble’s expansive resources and nationwide presence will provide our Southwestern community with a wide range of course textbooks and merchandise while remaining aligned with our commitment to equity and inclusivity in higher education.”

The First Day® Complete program provides equitable and inclusive access to all course materials, removing barriers to higher education and ensuring that every student is prepared for the first day of classes. Through Barnes & Noble’s nationwide presence, Southwestern will have access to an increased volume of course materials, creating a significant savings for students. Faculty will continue to have the freedom to select the best course materials for their classes, including print, digital, and OER selections.

All textbooks will be available for pick-up by students prior to the first day of classes at the existing bookstore location on the second floor of the McCombs Campus Center. For more information about the First Day® Complete program, click here.
