In a remarkable feat of academic excellence, Southwestern proudly announces a groundbreaking achievement: 100% of the sixteen 2023 medical and dental school applicants have been accepted. This accomplishment speaks volumes about the exceptional quality of education, rigorous training, and unwavering commitment to success that defines Southwestern’s academic programs.

The graduates were accepted into the following institutions: Texas A&M School of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, The University of Texas Medical Branch, UT Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, and McGovern Medical School at UT Health Houston, among others. Their momentous achievement puts them in a league of their own, surpassing esteemed institutions like Harvard University with a 95% acceptance rate, Duke University with an 85% acceptance rate, and UPenn with a 76% acceptance rate based on a report from 2018.

“As the Pre-Med Chair, I begin working with students from their first year of college,” Professor of Biology Maria Cuevas said. “We have set up a set of criteria that needs to be met. We host information sessions, give students feedback on their personal statements, and conduct practice interviews that guide and support our students through their journey. Southwestern offers students plenty of opportunities to exercise their leadership skills and demonstrate a desire to help others through many service opportunities.”

Southwestern also partners with St. David’s Hospital, providing shadowing experience to four students every semester. Selected students can shadow physicians, nurses, and technicians from areas of the hospital that would typically be difficult to access on their own. This is an extremely valuable opportunity, as shadowing experiences are very hard to come by.

The significance of this accomplishment extends beyond the walls of Southwestern. It is a testament to the University’s commitment to producing exceptional scholars who make an impact. With their well-rounded liberal arts education and remarkable drive, these graduates are poised to become the next generation of healthcare leaders, bringing their exceptional skills, unwavering dedication, and compassionate care to the forefront of medical practice.
