Assistant Professor of History (Tenure-Track)

The History Department at Southwestern University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in the history of East Asia to begin in August 2022. We welcome candidates with expertise in any area of East Asian history, but we will give priority to those who can offer courses focused on Chinese culture and society, and thus support the university’s Chinese language program.
The successful candidate will teach sections of world history (preferably with significant pre- or early modern coverage), regional surveys, and thematic seminars drawn from the candidate’s areas of expertise. These course offerings should be attractive to a wide range of students (within and outside the major) and accessible to first-year students. The Department is particularly interested in candidates whose teaching and/or research contributes to one or more of Southwestern’s interdisciplinary programs, including but not limited to Environmental Studies, Feminist Studies, International Studies, and/or Race and Ethnicity Studies. In addition, the successful candidate will rotate with colleagues teaching historiography and the senior research seminar. The teaching load is 3-2.
Campus-wide responsibilities include advising students and university service.
Required qualifications include a Ph.D. completed by the time of appointment. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Evidence of successful teaching experience is desirable.
