Southwestern University is seeking a versatile, dependable Communications Writer to be part of its Office of Marketing and Communications. We are looking for a strategic individual with experience writing for both print and digital media who knows how to work effectively with a team. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and implementing public-relations campaigns designed to elevate the reputation of the university at the local, state, and national levels and for maintaining clear, engaging communications with internal audiences (i.e., board members, administrators, faculty, staff, students, and parents).

Responsibilities:

  • Manage strategic communication projects and public-relations campaigns from concept to completion
  • Write accurate, clear, and compelling content for internal and external audiences, including but not limited to emails, press releases, talking points, newsletters, website content (e.g., FAQs), magazine copy, social media, video scripts, reports, and stakeholder communications
  • Report to and work closely with the content writer on projects as assigned
  • Achieve metrics for placing news features and press releases about the achievements of the university
  • Serve as a contact with the media and prepare board members, administrators, faculty, and staff for interviews with print, broadcast, and digital news reporters
  • Draft appropriate and timely responses to all media inquiries about the university and the university’s response to breaking news

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field
  • 2 years of communications and public relations experience
  • Expertise in online media, including email, Web, and social media
  • Agility under pressure, effectively handling tight deadlines, unexpected delays, revisions, ad hoc requests, and changing priorities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with team members and colleagues across the university
  • Excellent editing and proofreading skills
  • Familiarity with AP and Chicago styles
  • Organization, attention to detail, and ability to follow through
  • Proficiency with Microsoft and Google suites
