Southwestern University seeks a vibrant, goals-driven individual to provide strategic leadership and vision for the Center for Career and Professional Development. This self-driven professional will work to harness Southwestern’s entire community through engaging and reinforcing partnerships and collaborations to ensure students’ post-graduate success.  The Director’s portfolio will include a history of cultivating key partnerships, job placement, graduate school acceptance, career counseling, professional development, and volunteer engagement. This oversight will include guidance to Southwestern students and alumni in developing, assessing, and implementing life-long career development options.

Primary Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage the CCPD, including developing the strategic direction of the office, the supervising the staff, and managing the budget
  • Serve as the leadership face of Southwestern University with employers in developing and fostering employment opportunities
  • Work in cooperation with campus partners, alumni, parents, and friends of Southwestern in developing comprehensive career-readiness programs and funding opportunities to support career- competency development
  • Assist students and alumni with the career development and planning process, including obtaining information on companies, seeking current opportunities for employment and hiring practices, submitting fellowship applications, preparing graduate/professional school application materials, and making the transition from school to career
  • Establish procedures, prepares regular reports, and collects and analyzes research data relevant to the career planning and placement of students and alumni
  • Serve as the administrative liaison for volunteer-engagement initiatives related to career and professional development
  • Assist with other University Relations efforts as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum qualifications include: 

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least five years relevant experience in a career services environment within a university, recruitment services, and/or corporate recruitment management experience
  • Understanding of career-development opportunities and challenges in a liberal-arts college setting
  • Professionally self-driven with a commitment to achieving high-standard results
  • Demonstrated public relations/marketing abilities to be used on behalf of the university as a whole and CCPD specifically
  • Has knowledge, understanding, and acceptance of cultural differences and the diversity within the campus and community
  • Demonstrate professional manner with all internal and external university constituents
  • Demonstrate vision and strategy to meet targeted goals
  • Demonstrate leadership skills, including a strong work ethic, strategic planning, and proven supervisory and management skills
  • Appreciation for collaborating with key partners
  • Possess integrity and an affable nature
  • Willingness to adhere to the University’s core values
  • Possess excellent interaction and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Ability to be flexible, adjust to fluctuating priorities, and produce reliable work product
  • Proven ability to perform well in stressful situations
  • Ability and willingness to travel utilizing standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation
  • Ability to attend work consistently and maintain a regular work schedule
  • Ability and willingness to do occasional evening and weekend work
  • Excellent computer skills utilizing software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, and career- technology tools

Preferred Position Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Two or more years additional experience outside of the higher education field.
