Throughout the pandemic, many of us started new hobbies, from joining book clubs to taking evening walks outdoors. The Southwestern University Alumni Association developed a variety of online programs as a way to gather alumni during the quarantine. In April 2020, an online book club was started and since has discussed 12 books through a virtual meeting format. Alumni from across the country engage online discussing characters, themes, imagery, and more while reading through the book together. Many other virtual events have given alumni the ability to experience programs with faculty, staff, and students.

Recognizing that not all virtual programming needs to take place in front of a monitor, we are excited to announce the launch of the SU Walking Club. Alumni and friends of Southwestern are invited to participate to join the club which will involve monthly challenges, goals, teams, and support. For this virtual club, we will be using the Stridekick App that is available for free for both iPhone and Android devices. By using this app, you can participate in your hometown. There is a group chat feature in the app where participants will share words of encouragement and upload photos along their walks. We have also created an SU Walking Club Facebook page for the same purpose and to post about upcoming challenges. Participants utilizing a fitness tracker (iPhone Health app, FitBit, Garmin, etc.) will be able to sync to the app to record their steps each day, (the general rule is 2,000 steps per mile). Due to app restrictions, teams will be limited to nine people, so the Alumni Association may support multiple teams. Walkers may request who joins their respective team.

Sign up for details and to be contacted for SU Walking Club challenges.

Our first group challenge will correspond with a walk that President Laura E. Skandera Trombley will take on the John Muir Trail in California this August. If you have any questions, please contact Serena Bettis in the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations at or call 512.863.1589.

Please note: In-person events are making a comeback too! Join us on campus for President Laura E. Skandera Trombley’s Inauguration and Homecoming weekend, October 15–17, 2021. Local chapter events will return in September 2021.
