Welcome to Biology at Southwestern University! Whether you are taking courses in-person or online this semester, we look forward to getting to know you and are excited about your participation in the biology program. The pandemic and social distancing will make this semester different—perhaps even a little strange—but our commitment to students and their success remains the same.

We’ve planned a number of engagement activities this fall, including social events, informational sessions on things like advising, and workshops to help you develop valuable skills. Many of these events will take place on Mondays from 5:00-6:00 pm, so put that time down in your planner as ‘Biology Hour.’ All will occur virtually so that everyone can participate.

You will find that Biology is a “student-centered” department, with faculty who learn alongside their students and who boost student success by incorporating active learning in the classroom. We believe that one of the best ways to learn science is to do it, working side-by-side with other students and faculty engaged in discovery. I encourage you to reach out to faculty, ask about their research interests, and find out about how you can be involved. I am always available to help if you have any questions or difficulties. Just send me an email (pierceb@southwestern.edu), call, or text (512-863-1974).
