Exploring Lesbian Desire Through Shakespeare and the “Sapphic Switcheroo”
Advisor: Michael Saeger, Associate Professor of English
This project examines the works of Shakespeare through the lens of lesbian desire by learning from the Pride Films and Plays FL!P Fest and its all female performances in order to create a meaningful woman and lesbian focused performance of some of Shakespeare’s powerful monologues. The festival has a night titled Sapphic Switcheroo which consists of sapphic focused all female performances of scenes taken from classic comedies (including Shakespeare’s As You Like It). The on campus performance will be informed by this production and will question how we perceive lesbian desire, both past and present, and how Shakespeare functions for a modern audience. The post performance discussion will guide audience members through these questions and will be guided in part by the concepts taken from the Festival.
