Why major in anthropology or sociology? Internship experiences! In fact, many of our majors participate in internships during their time at Southwestern. For instance, Madeline Carrola (Sociology and Feminist Studies senior) did an internship this summer in San Antonio. Here’s her story:

“This past summer, I had the opportunity to intern at Congressman Lloyd Doggett’s San Antonio District Office through the City of San Antonio- Ambassador Summer Internship Program. On an average day, I answered phone calls from constituents who shared their opinions about our federal government and sought the office’s help navigating federal agencies, such as the Veterans Association, Social Security, and others.

From logging these casework calls, I got to learn more about constituent services, specifically the role of our congress members in providing this assistance and how federal agencies affect constituents in their daily lives. I was also happy to be able to work on various projects during my internship, one of which involved drafting congratulatory letters to constituents who had won a prestigious award or other recognition, like publishing a book or curating an art exhibit. I thought this was a really nice way that the office recognized constituents’ professional and personal achievements.”
