Happy 2018! The start of a new year is always full of excitement and optimism. New beginnings, new opportunities, and new challenges. Whether or not you believe in making resolutions, now is the perfect time to revisit and review your personal, academic, or professional goals.

Here at Southwestern, we have much to look forward to in 2018. We will open the year with several events in January, including speaker and Civil Rights Activist Dolores Huerta, and the Race and Ethnicity Symposium during MLK Week. On January 31st, we will welcome renowned social psychologist Jonathan Haidt as our speaker at the 2018 Roy and Margaret Shilling Lecture Series. Throughout the year there will be many more opportunities for all of us to think, create, and connect both inside and outside of the classroom.

Before the winter break, I had an opportunity to chat with Theatre major Joan Milburn ’19. We talked about Southwestern’s strategic vision and the positive things on the horizon for 2018. Our conversation was captured in this short video:

This past year we called upon the Southwestern community to evolve and refine not only Southwestern, but higher education itself, and our community has answered in marvelous ways. I look forward to seeing all that we will accomplish together in 2018 and beyond.
