Back the Bucs: A Strong Win for Athletics
All Southwestern Pirate Athletics teams emerged victorious on November 8th after concluding a very successful week-long giving challenge. The Back the Bucs Athletics Challenge surpassed the campaign’s original goal of 300 donors, raising over $60,000 from 346 Pirate fans including alumni, parents and families, students, faculty, staff and community members.
Backed by years of alumni runners and dedicated fans, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track Coach Francie Smith took the top spot for most donors with 45. Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving was close behind with 44 donors, thanks to a challenge by Coach Jon Duncan who agreed to “walk the plank” when the team reached their $4,000 goal. Men’s Lacrosse came in third with 27 donors, while a newcomer from Trinity University, J.C. Bunch–now Southwestern’s Head Men’s Baseball Coach–proved he is a Tiger no more with 25 donors and by far the most dollars raised by any team, over $25,000.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Back the Bucs Athletics Challenge by donating or sharing the campaign with friends. Every dollar raised will help Southwestern athletic programs with equipment, facility, or programming needs which support our student-athletes’ overall Southwestern Experience. For an idea of where the funds raised for each team might be directed, see the list of team needs here.
