This Spring has brought in several Southwestern University students to both Pi Mu Epsilon (PME), the national Mathematics honor society, and Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE), the national Computer Science honor society.

The PME induction occurred on Valentine’s day. The newly inducted students are Emma Albin, Jillian Bradley, Sarah Coe, Madison Edwards, Morgan Engle, Yash Gandhi, Manyun (Lily) Liu, Kristen McCrary, Nhi (Penny) Phan, Cory Schovanec, and Joshua Truitt. These students are the top Mathematics and Computational Mathematics at Southwestern University, who have also met all national PME guidelines for excellence in Mathematics.

Later in the semester at the end of March, Computer Science major Lauren Gillespie and Computational Mathematics major Yash Gandhi (also of PME) were inducted into UPE for their performance in Computer Science classes and satisfaction of national UPE guidelines.

The UPE induction ceremony was privileged to have Harvard Artificial Intelligence researcher Dr. Barbara Grosz as its induction speaker. Her talk dealt with her research, and was titled: “The Importance of Systems that Collaborate with People (and what it takes to make them work).” After the talk, new UPE students were inducted and treated to dinner along with other current UPE members.

Congratulations to all new members of PME and UPE!
