Busy Fall Semester for Computer Science
Fall 2016 kept CS students busy with both social and academic activities.
Early in the Fall, faculty, staff, and students participated in the annual Progressive Dinner, which was a multi-course meal taking place at various locations. The event began with appetizers in the Chapman-Whitmore Lounge on campus, was followed by a main course at the new house of IT staff member and CS Club sponsor David Williamson, and wrapped up with dessert at the home of current Information Services staff member and SU Alumnus Jefferson Ellinger ’13.
Later in the semester, at the end of October, four teams of three students each attended the Association for Computing Machinery’s 2016 South Central Regional Programming Contest, held at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. SU’s top scoring team was pi-Rates, consisting of Lauren Gillespie and Will Price, both Class of 2019, and Alex Rollins, Class of 2018. This team solved two programming problems, beating 22 other teams. Other teams from Southwestern each solved one problem. The students on these teams were Clay Stehling and Bobby Garza, both Class of 2019, Ryan Beeman, Valentin Cantu, Yash Gandhi, Jacob White, Kolton Noreen and Angus Strickland, all class of 2018, and Reid Cumbest, Class of 2017.
