Finding Inspiration in Formula: Mathematical Invention in Painting

- Carlos Barron
Our project unites principles of mathematics and computer science in the form of four Large-scale oil paintings. We use the golden ratio, through what may seem like a clinical, uninspired process of writing formulas and producing graphs, to design the pictorial composition for large paintings that will inspire visceral, emotional responses from the viewer. The apparent relationship between art and mathematics has become more clear and concrete in the last several decades due to the increased power of computers in graphic generation, and the opportunity to explore visual relationships has been streamlined by advanced, user-friendly software. The canvases are mapped out to follow certain patterns that are computationally predetermined, and then the piece will be painted in a way that creates emotional depth for the viewer.
