Sociology and Anthropology
Who we are and what we do.
Most students in the department present at national or regional anthropology or sociology conferences. Here, sociology students and faculty have dinner together after presentations at the Southern Sociological Society meetings in Atlanta, GA 2013
Most anthropology and sociology majors study abroad. Here, anthropology major, Kelly Holt, conducts ethnographic research in the Philippines, Summer 2010.
Every year, the department recognizes an outstanding graduating senior in Anthropology and one in Sociology at the annual Honors Convocation ceremony. Marta Selby (outstanding Sociology senior) and Guillermo Alvarado (co-winner for outstanding Race and Ethnicity senior), pose for a photo with Dr. Nenga, March 2016.
Our majors are actively involved in the campus community. Here, Anthropology seniors, Adriana Romero and Caroline Young, share the stage with President Burger and this year’s Shilling Lecture speaker, Sister Helen Prejean, April 2016.
The department hosts numerous faculty-student social events throughout the year. Here, department faculty and students pose for a photo at our annual end of the year dinner, April 2016.
Many of our majors have the opportunity to participate in faculty-student collaborative research; an experience which helps students hone their research skills and also leads to academic conference presentations and/or publications in peer-reviewed scholarly journals/books.
All department students present their research to the campus community at the end of their senior capstone course. Here, sociology students and department faculty pose for a photo after the sociology capstone presentations in the Prothro Room, Fall 2015.
And of course, GRADUATION!!!! Dr. Johnson and Dr. Sendejo with Anthropology graduating seniors, May 2013.
