Sarofim School of Fine Arts’ Theatre Department is pleased to present

“Don Juan Project: A Lecture-Performance”

Devised by Sergio Costola and Matthew Murphy

Lyrics by Lorenzo da Ponte

Music by Jason Hoogerhyde

Seductive and appalling, comic and captivating, Don Juan is one of the most ambiguous figures in Western literature. What attracts women to him? What makes Don Juan chase and run? What is he looking for? What makes so many men imagine, desire, and behave as if they were him? A collaboration between the Theatre and Music Departments, The Don Juan Project offers an investigation of the myth of Don Juan and its many varied interpretations beginning with its inception in the mind of the 17th century Spanish monk Tirso de Molina and following it through the work of many great writers and artists—Molière, Mozart, E. T. A. Hoffmann, Stendhal, Søren Kierkegaard, George Bernard Shaw, Jacques Lacan, Julia Kristeva, and Slavoj Žižek among others.
