The centerpiece of this concert is a set of five vocal duets based on specific dance forms (bolero, tarantella, habanera, etc.), composed by Gabriel Fauré, Achille-Claude Debussy, Pauline Viardot, Camille Saint-Saëns, and Frédéric Chopin (arr. Viardot). As the duets are sung, Southwestern University student dancers will perform original choreography inspired by each dance tradition.
This dynamic program also includes three chamber vocal works for soprano and double bass by Giovanni Bottesini and Amy Beach, as well as beloved ensembles from Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier and Claudio Monteverdi’s The Incoronation of Poppea.
Concert collaborators include Southwestern University bass instructor Jessica Gilliam-Valls, bass, guest artists Chuck Dillard, piano, Agnes Vojtko, mezzo soprano, and Southwestern University student Keeley Hooker ‘14, soprano. The Southwestern University student dancers performing are Brandon Baker ‘16 and India West ’16.
This event is free and open to the public.
