“A River of Words, Song Cycle” are children’s poems created into songs. Each year, in affiliation with The Library of Congress Center for the Book, ‘River of Words’ conducts a free international poetry and art contest for youth on the theme of Watersheds. The contest is designed to help youth explore the natural and cultural history of the place they live and to express, through poetry and art, what they discover. In 2011, David Asbury and Bruce Cain were awarded two separate grants, one from the Mellon Foundation and one from Southwestern University, to commission, premier, record and publish a cycle of art songs for baritone and guitar based on the poetry of the contest winners. By working with various composers they continue to build their ongoing project. David Asbury and Bruce Cain have been invited to debut this work in Canberra, Australia in November 2014.
