Southwestern University rose 13 places inU.S. News & World Report’s 2023Best Collegesrankings—the biggest single-year jump in school history—and SU was also recognized as a top school in the Social Mobility category, which measures how well schools graduated students who received federal Pell Grants.
This initiative was announced in October 2021 as part of a $1 million commitment from an anonymous donor in honor of their mother, a lifelong educator, in order to allow more Southwestern students to benefit from high impact experiences as outlined in the Tactical Plan.

Our panel members are:
Hannah Freeman is a 2020 SU graduate who double majored in Mathematics and Financial Economics. In her time at Southwestern, she was Treasurer of ZTA, a leader for Student Foundation, a Statistician for FAP, and a Peer Mentor. Upon graduating, Hannah moved to Houston and joined CBRE as a Portfolio Analyst in their Surveillance Department. She was soon promoted to Senior Analyst due to her attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and proficiency with excel. In her free time, she creates Pricing Models, Profit Projections, Breakeven Analyses, and Budgets as CFO for King Events.
Courtney King is a 2020 graduate who majored in business and minored in religion. In her time at Southwestern, she was a leader of Student Foundation and Honor Code Council, Vice President of Membership of Tri Delta, an RA, and part of the inaugural class of LIVE (Lab for Innovative Ventures and Entrepreneurship). Upon graduating, Courtney served as the Young Alumni Board of Trustee Member for SU, worked at Ryan LLC as an oil and gas tax consultant, and assisted weddings on the weekend with Keely Thorne Events. Courtney currently works at the Houston Museum of Natural Science planning fundraising events, such as their annual Gala, Critter Crawl, and Science Luncheon, and is the founder and CEO of King Events.
Christopher graduated from Southwestern University in 1989. He was an Academic All-American in basketball and had the opportunity to tour Spain and Germany with a Nike team. Christopher spent 25 years in senior leadership Sales positions for Kodak, Dell, and Hewlett-Packard. He started his own consultancy, Elevate Strategy Group, in 2012. Elevate partners with F-500 companies on all aspects of leadership, communication, motivation, and employee engagement. He has been happily married to Natalie, an attorney at Chub Insurance, for over 24 years. They have one amazing son, Hamilton August Prescott, who is 16 years old.
Carl Shaulis is a 1983 SU graduate with a BS in Chemistry and a Biology minor. During his time at Southwestern, he was an active member of Pi Kappa Alpha and loved all intramural sports, and was a member of the SU Men’s Soccer Club. Carl used his Chemistry degree managing an ambient air laboratory for 10 years, then pivoted his career toward delivering high-valued software for various industries. Today Carl lives in Round Rock, Texas, and is an Engineering Director at Zenbusiness PBC, where his focus is on Operational Excellence. Carl has been the sponsor of several innovation events in partnership with 3 Day Startup and has been a repeat judge at several Hackathons in association with the University of Texas. He loves to play golf, and cards; enjoys gardening, and is a member of the SU Alumni Council.
