Learn more about the Gilman scholarship that awards up to $5,000 to Pell Grant eligible students for study abroad.

The Gilman national scholarship awards up to $5,000 for study abroad participation to high financial-need students who are Pell Grant recipients. Historically Southwestern students have consistently received Gilman awards in the amounts of $4,000-$5,000 to fund their study abroad programs. Required essays are part of the application. The Debby Ellis Writing Center staff are well rehearsed and have helped SU students successfully prepare Gilman essays.

At this workshop, SU Study Abroad staff will present information about the Gilman scholarship, including eligibility, the application process, and upcoming deadlines. Maurice Wilson, Director of the Debby Ellis Writing Center, will give information relevant to what Gilman committee members look for in application essays. He and his staff will provide initial writing exercises to get you jump-started on your application essays.

If you are eligible for a Pell Grant, want to study abroad, and need funding to do so, this workshop is well worthwhile! It could result in a $5,000 Gilman study abroad scholarship award!

The next application cycle deadline is March 1st. The other application cycle deadline will be in October later this year.
