The Art and Art History Department at Southwestern University presents three senior art exhibitions by Danbi Heo (Bachelor of Arts) , Zoe Watts (Bachelor of Fine Arts), and Leigh Weinberg (Bachelor of Arts) in the Sarofim Gallery, East Rutersville Drive, Georgetown, Texas.

Danbi Heo’s series, Toys! Toys! Toys!, investigates gender identity through paintings of monumentally scaled toys in the Pop Art style with colorfully designed backgrounds that hint at the toys’ functions.  While celebrating the refined, precise designs of the toys and the attractive radiance of the colors that brought Heo to appreciate the irresistible appeal of the products’ beauty, she presents through her paintings a critique of Western commercial culture and the subtle ways it influences children to grow into and accept gender stereotypes.

In her exhibition, 迷失之间, Zoe Watts assembles large-scale structures that examine identity, intersectionality, and race in America through the combined use of Western and traditional Chinese aesthetic elements. Through a series of interviews, personal experiences, and photographs, she creates an accumulation of perspectives in order to visualize how an individual can be a part of a culture by definition, but feel significantly separated from it.

Leigh Weinberg’s sculpture series Bestial explores the ways that expectation and perception affect the human psyche in a society built upon self-exploitation and obsession. Through the combination and exaggeration of human and animal anatomy, she creates chimeric beasts that personify how society’s strict standards of beauty, gender, and sexuality have mutated how individuals interact with the world, each other, and themselves.
The reception is on Thursday, March 14 from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. with artists’ talks beginning at 5:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
