First Lecture with Dr. Vanessa Mikan, Assistant Professor of Instruction in Kinesiology:  The Way to Wellness with Pythagoras, Plato and Pooh

    7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. | Mabee Atrium

“In order for us to succeed in life, we have been provided with two means, education and physical activity. Not separately, one for the soul and the other for the body, but for the two together. With these two means, we can attain perfection. For the part can never be well if the whole is not well (Plato).”

Stress, anxiety, depression and sleep difficulties are the leading factors impeding college student academic performance, all of which are exemplified during times of change and transition. There is so much we can learn from ancient Greek philosophers to that silly ole’ simpleminded bear when it comes to finding our Way toward being well. Pooh is a bear with very little brain but “is brain all that important?” Is it really brain that takes us where we need to go? Over the course of these next four years, you will be finding your Way through the Enchanted Forest. There may be times where you run into some heffalumps and woozles, presenting challenges from every angle. However, Pooh finds you will always get to where you need to be “by walking away from where I have been.”

Wellness is a conscious, self-directed process in which we make choices to improve and bring balance to our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. The most important step is awareness. “The great science to live happily is to live in the present (Pythagoras).” Taking a moment in each day to be mindful, breathe and move can alleviate feelings of anxiety, stress and tension and produce feelings of happiness, joy and peace.

In this First Lecture, we will exercise the mind and the body through meditation and movement. Professor Mikan will guide you through breathing techniques to reduce anxiety before an exam or presentation. Seated chair stretches to loosen tensing muscles from long study sessions and writing assignments, along with healthy bedtime habits to help relax the mind and the body to aid in more restful, restorative sleep, will be shared. There will be plenty of challenges these next few years; simply focus on what is within your control and you will find your Way.
