Internships
Student Research
Research experiences outside of the classroom are valuable career preparation for those scientific and technical fields.
Faculty-led research is one of Southwestern’s key high-impact experiences. Students can engage in research during the long session and in the summer, both at Southwestern and off campus. In essence, research is the “internship” for science and technical fields.
SU SCOPE: In this student-faculty collaborative summer research experience for Southwestern students, SCOPE Scholars spend eight weeks conducting full-time research alongside Southwestern faculty mentors. Past projects include research in biology, business, chemistry, computer science, kinesiology, mathematics, physics, and psychology.

Numerous academic and healthcare facilities host SURF programs. Search for “SURF program” in your web browser.
NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION SUMMER REU (RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATES): NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel.
