Gifts of Securities
Giving stocks and bonds that have increased in value (and that you have owned for more than one year) provides even greater tax benefits than giving cash. Not only is the market value of the securities deductible (subject to applicable limitations), but you also avoid paying the capital gains tax on the appreciation.
Stock held in custody with a brokerage firm or bank trust department can be transferred directly from the custodian firm or bank to Southwestern’s account at Regions Bank.
Donor Advised Funds (DAF)
Southwestern University is a 501(c)3 organization and is a qualified recipient of grants from your donor advised fund (DAF) held at a community organization or financial institution. If you have established a donor advised fund with a financial institution such as Fidelity or Charles Schwab, among many others, consider recommending a grant to Southwestern University. Contributions through your DAF can be initiated by contacting your fund advisor.
Grants should be mailed to Southwestern University, Development Office, P.O. Box 770, Georgetown, TX 78627. Southwestern University is legally registered with the IRS with a tax ID (EIN) of 74-1233796. If you have any questions about donating through a DAF, please contact the Development Office at 512.863.1211.
You may also choose Southwestern University to receive grants from your DAF in the future. You can name Southwestern as a beneficiary of your donor advised fund and ensure that your philanthropy continues. You can update your beneficiary designation by contacting your financial institution (and in some cases, your community organization) and requesting the appropriate paperwork.
We encourage you to inform the university of your intentions so we can thank you and discuss how you would like your gift to be put to use in the future. Contact the Development Office at 512.863.1211 if you have questions about including Southwestern in your legacy plans.
IRA Charitable Rollover Gifts
