JEDI Student Organizations
From identity-based organizations to groups dedicated to specific causes, SU can connect you with communities dedicated to embracing inclusivity, diversity, social justice, and community empowerment.
The Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Center's JEDI Student Organizations serves as an umbrella organization for the registered cultural and social identity organizations at Southwestern University. Since 2011 this group has grown from six to more than ten organizations.
Mission
The mission of JEDI Student Organizations is to foster an inclusive and supportive community of student organizations that promotes and celebrates diversity. JEDI Student Organizations is a united voice dedicated to empowering the SU community to challenge the oppression of any individual or group.
Vision
Our collective vision is to be an effective, organized forum for students to discuss the issues surrounding justice and to act upon these issues in order to institute real change within our campus community.
Purpose
The purpose of JEDI Student Organizations is to challenge systems of oppression by the following:
- Educate the greater community on issues of social justice and diversity
- Create and facilitate a broad and deep awareness and understanding of unique/different experiences
- Provide an inclusive environment for our members and community where support will be provided for student leaders in the fight for social justice
- Striving to create a safe place for everyone
Structure
JEDI Student Organizations serves as an umbrella organization for the following groups on campus:
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. ®
Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. was the first sorority created for
African-American women to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and
ethical standards; promote unity and friendship among college women;
alleviate problems concerning girls and women; maintain a progressive
interest in college life; and provide service to all mankind.
Asian Student Organization
Asian Student Association works to revive and maintain campus-wide
interest, activity, and exploration within the distinctive cultures of
Asia and to provide a space to support Asian/Pacific Islander/Desi
American students.
Black Student Union (BSU)
The Black Student Union promotes unity among African Americans and the
Southwestern community and greater awareness and appreciation of
African-American culture.
E.M.P.I.R.E.
The Established Men Promoting Intelligence, Respect, and Efficacy
(EMPIRE) members work to break down racial stereotypes and serve as
positive male role models on campus and in the local community.
Hispanic and Latinx Organization (HALO)
Hispanics and Latinx Organization (HALO) is a student organization
dedicated to fostering awareness and education about Hispanic and Latinx
culture. HALO unites students on campus and encourages leadership,
service, and empowerment of students.
Kappa Delta Chi Sorority
Kappa Delta Chi Sorority has been a member organization of the National
Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO) since 2000. NALFO
is the premier umbrella council for Latina/o Greek-letter organizations.
The purpose of NALFO is to promote and foster positive interfraternal
relations, communication, and development of all Latino Fraternal
organizations through mutual respect, leadership, honesty,
professionalism, and education.
Muslims and Allies
Muslims and Allies was established to teach members and the student body
about Islam, its followers, and its history; to create a better
understanding in the community about the Muslim people; and to support
Muslim and non-Muslim students as they learn more about Islam.
Pirates for Pride
Pirates for Pride, formerly SU Allies, fosters a visible, tangible
support group for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer/questioning,
intersex, asexual, and pansexual communities at Southwestern and their
allies.
Reproductive Justice Alliance
The Reproductive Justice Alliance promotes an understanding of
reproductive justice on campus, which includes economic justice, the
environment, immigrants’ rights, disability rights, discrimination based
on race and sexual orientation, and a host of other community-centered
concerns.
SU NATIVE
Native Americans Teaching Indigenous Values Everywhere (SU NATIVE) works
to raise awareness of Native American and Indigenous teachings, values,
and cultures to build a connection between the SU community and native
issues in the Georgetown area.
