Placement and Credit (through 2016/2017 catalog)

For those students whose placement examination indicates proficiency beyond the fourth semester sequence (300 level or higher), credit is granted for language 114, 124 plus 4 lower-level elective credits (for a total of 12 credits). For those students who are to finish their language sequence at Southwestern, completion of the course into which they were placed with a grade of B- or better in that course may grant additional elective credits. Students placed into a 124 level course who earn a grade of B- or better in that course will receive credit for the 124 level course plus the 114 level course and 4 additional lower-level elective credits (for a total of 12 credits). Students who are placed into a 114 level course and earn a grade of B- or better in that course will receive credit for the 114 level course plus 4 additional lower level elective credits (for a total of 8 credits). Students who pass either the 114 or 124 level course with a grade below B- will receive the 4 credits associated with that course. Students who are placed into either a 014 or a 024 level course will receive 4 credits for the successful completion of that course.

AP and IB

Students who score well in AP courses or IB courses may receive credit in addition to placement.
