Dear Classmates:

Thank you! You were part of a special time.

We came, we saw…then, we talked and laughed and talked some more. Some came from as far away as Washington or Florida or Wisconsin. Some came in the comfort of longtime pals with whom they’ve remained connected. Some came, perhaps from bravery or curiosity, who had never been back after leaving Southwestern. Some, perhaps, enjoyed conversations with former classmates with whom they had never chatted before.

It was a busy weekend, a blend of remembrance, compressed activities, and a peek at SU’s way forward.

For those who weren’t able to come, a formal luncheon on Friday gave us a chance to match name tags and faces, then and now. Dr. Burger spoke briefly about the value of a liberal arts education as preparation for life, and then Bill Hardt reflected on the solid foundation from Southwestern that was our takeaway as we marched into a tumultuous world in 1969. Ken Klaveness spoke about a meaningful time of unity during our sophomore year when Dan Rea was lost to a flood on the San Gabriel River, followed by the names of classmates who have passed away over the years. A highlight was receiving our 50-year recognition pins.

The official finale for our special reunion was the casual Saturday night party, complete with great food, soft guitar melodies from the 60s and 70s, a nostalgic video loop from yearbooks, more pictures, and some door prizes awarded to David Pena, Beverly (Palmer) and Leonard Murphy, and Patsy Williams Cruser. We celebrated as only a bunch of 70-plus people can, and a group of four or five were told once or twice, “the party’s over,” yet they lingered on. What a tribute!

So many classmates thanked committee members, yet it’s we who are grateful to so many who made a special effort to be back for reunion events. Southwestern staff already had effective plans in place to make it all run smoothly, and we wish even more could have celebrated.

Thanks for new memories.
