President, Student Government Association

Fellow students, faculty, and most of all, President Trombley, welcome to this most wonderful occasion. My name is William Hebl, and I am the Student Government Association President here at Southwestern. I stand before you proudly representing the student body.

President Trombley, today we celebrate your inauguration. In some ways you’ve already been inaugurated. After all, you’ve already welcomed 1500 new and returning students to our beautiful campus. You’ve led us through a semester and a half of Covid-19, in its full force. You’ve led us through an unprecedented winter storm (it appears it might have followed you down from Connecticut). Recall, y’all, that it was the first time we have ever hit temperatures below zero in Georgetown! And, President Trombley, you’ve survived a shockingly mild summer in Texas. The temperatures have ONLY averaged 95 degrees. Yee haw.

We celebrate you, not only for becoming our president, but also for becoming our first female president. We are thrilled with this progressive choice. And we are so excited for the ways in which you will lead us and the places you will take us. We look forward to getting to know you. For the old traditions you will continue and the new ones that you will start.

Now, I feel like an SGA president should offer some sage wisdom in an inaugural speech so I sought the work of someone you love — Mark Twain — and here is a quote from him…and this is a quote from which I think we can all benefit:

“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.”

Welcome, President Trombley.

Do great things here at Southwestern.
