The following individuals were recently recognized as award recipients for the 2022-23 academic year. Teaching awards: Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry Chelsea Massaro, Assistant Professor of Philosophy Jorge Lizarzaburu, and Associate Professor of French Francis Mathieu. Assistant Professor of Art Ron Geibel won the Jesse E. Purdy Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Works Award. The Advising Award went to Associate Professor of Chemistry Michael Gesinski.

Assistant Professor of Art Ron Geibel’s sculpture from his Untitled (decoy) series was selected for the 33rd annual Materials: Hard + Soft International Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition at the Patterson–Appleton Arts Center in Denton, TX. The exhibition was curated by Beth McLaughlin, chief curator of exhibitions and collections at Fuller Craft Museum, in Brockton, MA. McLaughlin selected 72 works from over 1,300 submissions from 16 countries. Recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the country, the Materials: Hard and Soft  exhibition celebrates the evolving field of contemporary craft and is on view through May 9, 2020.

Assistant Professor of Art Ron Geibel currently has a two-person exhibition titled N with Dutch artist Jan ten Have at the Bogert Gallery in Knokke, Belgium. Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Ron Geibel is one of 15 artists selected to participate in the exhibition Inspired: Contemporary Responses to a Legacy of Courage at the Susquehanna Art Museum in Harrisburg, PA, May 10 through Aug. 18. The exhibition celebrates the 50th anniversary of the historic Stonewall uprising in New York City—a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history.  The Susquehanna Art Museum partnered with the LGBT Center of Central Pennsylvania and Dickinson College Archives and Special Collections to include artifacts from the History Project collection in the exhibition. The History Project documents the stories and history of LGBTQ+ life and activism in Central Pennsylvania. From there, the show travels to the Lancaster Museum of Art in Lancaster, PA, through Nov. 2019.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Ron Geibel had two sculptures selected for Clay Houston’s Biennial exhibition titled “Future Artifacts,” on view at Central Visual Arts Gallery at Houston Community College.  “Future Artifacts” features contemporary ceramic works by artists from Arizona, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. The exhibition runs March 4–April 6.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Ron Geibel was a visiting artist in the Ceramics Department at the University of North Texas on Feb. 13 and 14 as part of their 2019 Dual Visiting Artist Workshop Series. He worked alongside potter Chris Pickett, an assistant professor of art at Idaho State University. The dual visiting series pairs one potter and one sculptor for a two-day workshop that includes demonstrations, critiques, and a public artist talk.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Ron Geibel participated in Pentaculum, a one-week artist residency at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN, Jan. 612. The invitational residency brings together nearly 50 artists working in various media, including fibers or textiles, ceramics, metals, 2D arts, wood or sculpture, and writing. The opportunity provides an intimate atmosphere for meaningful dialogue and offers space for individual artistic growth alongside the opportunity to strengthen and build meaningful relationships within the arts-and-crafts field.

Visiting Professor of Art Ron Geibel’s work from his “Lick” ice cream series, currently on display at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, is being published in the January 2019 issue of Ceramics Monthly magazine to highlight the 2018 CraftTexas exhibition. The biennial juried exhibition showcases the best in Texas-made contemporary craft.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Ron Geibel has a sculpture included in the 2018 CraftTexas exhibition at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft in Houston, TX. The exhibition was curated by Jennifer Scanlan, the curatorial and exhibitions director at Oklahoma Contemporary in Oklahoma City. CraftTexas 2018 is the tenth in a series of biennial juried exhibitions showcasing the best in Texas-made contemporary craft. The show features 50 works by 36 artists and includes a wide range of sculpture, jewelry, and furniture, with a strong emphasis on cutting-edge works. The exhibition is on view through Jan. 6, 2019.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Ron Geibel’s work was selected to be part of a group exhibition titled “Defining Form” at The Untitled Space in New York, N.Y. The exhibition explores how sculpture has evolved with the impact of contemporary culture: The art form has transcended from the conventional portrait to works that challenge the status quo; that address gender identity, racial stereotypes, LGBTQ ideologies, and queer constructs; and that explore themes of the resistance movement as well as progressive feminist narratives and activism. The exhibition was on view July 11 through Aug. 8, 2018.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Ron Geibel is featured in the 2018 Contemporary Austin’s Crit Group Exhibition at grayDUCK Gallery in Austin. The exhibition features the work of eight local artists selected to participate in The Contemporary Austin’s nine-month program, which aims to build a network for artists and their practice. The opening reception is Saturday, August 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. at grayDUCK Gallery located on East Cesar Chavez in Austin. Artist talks will be on Saturday, August 25 at 2 p.m.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Ron Geibel’s artwork is featured in Issue IX of Create! Magazine, an independent, contemporary art magazine highlighting the work of artists, makers, and creative entrepreneurs from around the world. He also has artwork published in A Ceramic Guide: The Art of Creating and Teaching Wheel-Thrown Ceramics by Trent Berning. The book offers a detailed approach to the ceramic medium and highlights the use of the potter’s wheel as a mode of artistic expression.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Ron Geibel’s work was chosen for The 22nd San Angelo National Ceramic Competition. The juror for the exhibition, Peter Held, is an award winning artist, academic, writer and former curator at the Ceramics Research Center at Arizona State University. The exhibition celebrates both functional and sculptural ceramics from the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The exhibition is on view April 20–June 24 at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts in San Angelo, Texas.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Ron Geibel served on a panel titled “New Queers Eve: LGBT Clay” at the 52nd annual National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) conference in Pittsburgh, Pa., March 14–17. The panel featured four LGBT artists who make choices about the legibility of their queer experience in overt and coded ways in their work. For Queer Theorist José Esteban Muñoz, living a queer experience in or out of the public eye is an act of artwork and activism, filled with poignancy, pleasure, beauty, and urgent work. Panelists discussed ways in which they navigate issues of exposure and vulnerability by making this aspect of their experience public through depictions, metaphors, and objects.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Ron Geibel is one of eight local artists selected to take part in The Contemporary Austin’s 2018 Crit Group. The program helps build a network for artists by providing monthly group critiques and one-on-one studio visits with the co-leaders and gallerists.  Participating artists were selected by Annette Carlozzi, former Curator at Large at the Blanton Museum of Art, Sterling Allen, Assistant Professor of Sculpture at Texas State University, and Andrea Mellard, Director of Public Programs and Community Engagement for The Contemporary Austin. The program culminates in a group exhibition at grayDuck Gallery in Austin in August 2018.

The first exhibition, “By Hand,” an international craft competition at Blue Line Gallery in Roseville, Calif., will be on view Jan. 19March 3, 2018. The second, “Contemporary South,” will open Feb. 2 at Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh, NC. “Contemporary South” showcases some of the most ambitious and timely works by artists from across the regional south. The exhibition is on view through March 24, 2018.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Ron Geibel had work selected for an exhibition titled “Small Works” at Trestle Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. The exhibition was juried by Bill Carroll, Director of the Studio Program of the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts in New York City. Small Works features over 60 local, national, and international artists in all different areas of contemporary art who focus on the significance of intimately scaled works of art.  The exhibition will be on view to the public July 6–27, 2017.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Ron Geibel had two sculptures selected for an exhibition titled “Sweet ‘n Low: An International show of Cute” at Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek, Calif.  The exhibition was juried by Evan Pricco, editor of Juxtapoz Magazine, and Susannah Kelly and Neil Perry of Antler Gallery in Portland, Ore. Sweet ‘n Low features artwork from over 130 local, national, and international artists who extend the genre of cute from cuddly and precious to creepy and ironic. The exhibition will be on view June 22–Aug. 27, 2017.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Ron Geibel is featured in an exhibition titled “Mixed Feelings: The Irreverent Object” at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore. The exhibition examines how ceramic art, rooted in the domestic, plays an active role in reflecting and shaping identities. The exhibition is part of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) annual conference, March 22–25 in Portland, Ore.
