    Notables: Honors, Awards, Publications

Southwestern Psych Department again recognized in National Paper Competition
Allison Dickson won 3rd place in thise year's Psi Chi/Allyn & Bacon Psychology Awards Competition, which honors the best empirical papers in psychology. Her paper, entitled entitled "Eminem vs. Charlie Pride: Race, stereotypes, and perceptions of rap and county music performers" was co-authored by Dr. Traci Giuliano, Clint Morris, and Keri Cass and is currently in press at the Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research. Allison's award makes her the 5th SU student in 4 years to place in the top 3 in this prestigious competition, and is a testament to the excellent research opportunities and mentoring available in the department.

    SU Students Author Journal Articles
Three groups of psychology majors recently had their papers (based on projects conducted in their research methods course) accepted for publication in psychology journals. All students are first authors, which is a rare feat for an underaduate. In addition to the paper by Dickson, Giuliano, Morris, and Cass mentioned above, Liz Dodd was thrilled when her paper (co-authored with Dr. Traci Giuliano, Jori Boutell, and Brooke Moran), "Respected or rejected: Perceptions of women who confront sexist remarks" was accepted into the journal Sex Roles/I> Notably, the paper will also be cited in the next edition of Margaret Matlin's best-selling Psychology of Gender textbook. Katie Kirkendall also has a paper, entitled "The bold and the beautiful: The effect of physical attractiveness and extraversion on desirability" and co-authored with Dr. Traci Giulisno, Deann Dixon, and Ann Raney, currently in press at the Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research.

    Outstanding Student Award (1998-99)

    Allison Dickson
Each year, the psychology department honors a graduating senior for outstanding performance during his or her career at Southwestern. This year, Allison Dickson was selected from an excellent class of students, and will be honored in February at honor's convocation (as part of Family Weekend). Honored students receive a token of appreciation from the department as well as their names permanently engraved on a plaque on the 2nd floor of the Olin building. Congratulations, Allison!
