The pitching of Mike Timlin '88 helped the Boston Red Sox lay the Curse of the Bambino to rest as they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals to win the 2004 Major League Baseball World Series. This was Timlin's third appearance in the fall classic since he entered the majors in 1991. His first World Series turn came with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1992.

Timlin, originally from Midland, Texas, majored in business while attending Southwestern and was drafted by the Blue Jays following the Pirates 1987 season. Surprisingly, he arrived at Southwestern only a part-time pitcher, but his hard throwing convinced coach Jim Mallon that Timlin would have a future in the pros. He has pitched for the Blue Jays, Mariners, Orioles, Cardinals, Phillies and Red Sox during his 14 years in major league baseball.

Timlin was one of three Sox relievers who combined to pitch the final innings of Boston's Game One victory. Together, the pitchers allowed just one earned run over three innings.
