[2/10/08] The Bucs opened the first of what would be several home games in a row on Sunday on a beautiful day that was easily in the mid 70's at game time. In its first conference game of the year, the Bucs were not sure what to expect from the Mavericks, sporting their new uniforms, after a year hiatus from the league, and an impressive win against Sam Houston State the week before.

The Bucs were able to come out and dominate the game from start to finish, with all players getting solid minutes. The Bucs came out and wasted no time scoring, again with Irish scoring the first goal of the game (see Irish, I do notice) for the third straight game. The Bucs continued to puts points on the board, taking an 8-0 lead into the second, and taking an 11-1 lead into half.

Walker came in for the second half and played quite well in the net, only giving up 2 goals (one off a beautiful pass from the UTA goalie to an attackman for a quick fast break that caught the SU defense off guard). The Bucs meanwhile took a 17-1 lead into the fourth and finished the game 20-3.

All players, were able to get some valuable experience against a predominantly zone defense. Faulk really started to step it up on the field, as did Chase, Connor, Mock, who took so many shots but could not find the back of the net, and Ben. Hawthorne notched his first career goal off a great assist by Bryson, and Senior President Lockwood received his first game ball for his relentless effort and hat trick on the day.

The long poles all did a great job of shutting down some very good short sticks for UTA. Carney continues to impress, as does Fern. Marsh got in quite a bit at LSM and shows great potential. Tomasz also saw his first action of the year and played very well.

The game allowed the Bucs to see several things they need to work on. However, the game, the fans, including Baker (we are not sure if you were scouting for Ft. Lewis or supporting us), Jones, Shug, and Barber. Just kidding Baker, we miss you even if you do get to go skiing every week in Durango. We don't care, really!!!!!

Next week, the Bucs host Sam Houston State, back in the league after several years, and a team with a lot of potential. It is great to have them back in the mix again, and we look forward to the opportunity to play them.
