SU VS. BAYLOR (2/18/07)

On Sunday of Family weekend, the Bucs hosted Div. A opponent Baylor, a team that the Bucs had beaten last year 9-2.

Early indications and history, however, showed two things. Baylor had been very solid this year, and historically has been a solid team in Div. A.

The Bucs have played Baylor for years, and over the last ten years they have been very close games won by Southwestern or solid wins by Baylor. Last year was the first year the Bucs and Bears played after a four year hiatus. The game last year was not indicative of the team Baylor presented this year.

As the game started, the Bucs, unprepared for the quick ball movement and one of the best face-off men we will see all year, fell into a 3-1 hole in the first. A solid 5 goal run in the second left the Bucs, playing sluggish and literally getting man handled, with an 8-2 deficit.

As the third started, the Bucs began to wake up. While Baylor still was able to capitalize on offensive opportunities, they were much more contested and the Bucs were much more active. A move from goalie to LSM for Jake helped us to control more of the transition game, and the entire team showed signs of life.

With the start of the fourth and the game in the hands of the Bears, the Bucs decided to play as hard as they could, regardless of the score, to show the Bears, and more importantly, themselves what type of lacrosse they were capable of.

The attack came alive. Webb, who finished with 7 points on the day, saw his other two attackmen, Jones, and Wersonske take charge. Wersonske went crazy, having a hand in almost every one of the goals in the fourth, and the defense and middies made sure we had plenty of opportunities by limiting shots and controlling ground balls.

The fourth was one of the best quarters the Bucs had played all year. It was the type of play the Bucs are capable of every quarter of every game.

Hats off to a very solid Baylor team and Coach Murphy. Baylor's goalie was very solid, stopping a few shots that were amazing, including a screened rebound shot by Lockwood on crease that was simply put, "sick".

The Bucs came away from the game with a 16-10 loss. However, what they came away with was a much better understanding of the type of lacrosse they can play, and the type of lacrosse they HAVE to play to get wins against teams at the national level.

We look forward to making the trek to Waco next year to play Baylor again.

We appreciate all the family and fans that came out over the weekend to support our team in this young season.
