SU AND THE ALUMS WIN ON A GREAT DAY FOR LACROSSE! (11/07/06)

The alumni game is an annual tradition at Southwestern's Homecoming and Reunion Weekend.
While the score will show that the current SU Lacrosse team
prevailed in the final box score, all that showed up to play on
Saturday were winners.
For the first time since I can remember, the alums showed up in
force, with literally members of the team from as far back as
the '89 championship, to those that were on last years
Championship team, and literally everywhere in between.
In all, over 17 alums suited up to play the current roster and a
good time was had by all. Webb went on a scoring spree as did
Jones and Irish and Thompson for the Bucs.
While the scoring in the 16-5 game was much more spread out for
the alumn, coached by Hall of Famer Monty Curtis, all the goals
were definitely a big deal. The alumni who made it in the score
book include Frank Makal on a move that even faked himself out,
Eric Baker on one of his patented moves from behind the crease,
Jay Gupta, who camped out in the crease and painted a top corner,
Biermacher, who hasn't lost too many steps (jk), and the Elder
statesman in the scoring column, Jeff English, who scored on a
coast to coast, pele-esque drive that ended in a goal in front of
his kids, who had never seen him score. What a treat.
There, were of course, moments that will be remembered, such as Om
playing long stick, Om holding Fletch's stick(because Om told him
not to run too much) and Fletch getting called for a holding
penalty, and Om literally ; ) juking Webb so bad he nearly broke
his ankles. Do we see some patterns developing. Om came out to
scout and trash talk earlier in the week, and his shenanigans on
the field were a continuation.
I'm sure I'll miss some of the alums, but thanks goes out to
Zan "white lightning", Zach Beaty, Nick Sortin, Ben Thompson, Andy
Ozley, Dave Bryant, Eric Baker, Frank Makal, Mike Jeffcoat, Eric
Stein, Daniel Ehrlich (who bought new white cleats for the game -
but borrowed mine when he was playing), Jeff English, Matt Denton,
Alan, Brent "Pasty" Wilson, Om Panchal, Jay Gupta.
Alumni who were there but did not dress include Scott Adams,
Foresberg, Andrew Magnuson, and Westin Hurt.
This was truly an amazing turnout and the team sincerely
appreciates it and all the support we have received from our
lacrosse brethren.
Our hope, after over 24 years of lacrosse at Southwestern, is that
the alumni continue to have a strong presence in following our
team each year, and in making it back and strapping on
the "oldschool" helmets and pads one more time each year in
conjunction with Homecoming.
The team is where it is in large part because of the groundwork
that each of the alums has laid. We enjoyed every minute of the
game, especially the part where Frank whiffed on a wide open shot
(sorry Frank, I had to get that one in there), and seeing two of
the best face-off men in the teams history in Stein and Bier(who
finally got to play attack - if I'd only known back then what I do
now...you'd still have played middie : )), as well as some of the
great defenders in Pasty, Thompson, Sortin, Denton(it was great to
see you ON the field) and Ehrlich, and the two great goalies in
Bryant and Ozley(who has literally played just about every
position).
Zan and Beaty and Stein haven't lost a step. Baker continues to
amaze with his wizardry around the crease, Jay and Om, well let's
just say, what would Southwestern Lacrosse be without them. I've
never seen a first year Med student so calm and happy Jay, and Om,
stop cheating, your teaching our young players some bad habits.
And it was great to see English and Jeffcoat. English for scoring
in front of his kid (and not bribing anyone to do it JK), and
Jeffocat for showing up EARLY for the first time ever for a game.
We hope the alums will continue to follow our team this year as we
make a push for the national championships for a third straight
year. Thanks for making this one of the best homecoming games
ever guys, and dare I say, see you next year!!!
