SU ADVANCES TO ITS 2ND STRAIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP (4/29/06)
In a rematch of last years LSA Div. B Championship, The Bucs
played UTA in the first of two semi final matches on Saturday.
After a quick front that passed through in the early morning hours
that dropped over an inch on the ground, the sun rose on the
Southwestern campus, home of the 2006 LSA Championships, as well
as the first game of the tournament, SU vs. UTA.
Southwestern controlled much of the game, as it had done in the
regular season with a convincing 14-5 win. Ten of the 14 goals
scored were assisted, as the ball was spread throughout the
offensive players very well.
The defense was absolutely phenomenal once again, as the game ball
went to Jr. Captain Travis Nelson for his consistent play every
single possession of every game against some of the best players
on each opposing team. Travis leads by example, along with the
other two starting d-men, and no one can argue that the success of
the Bucs starts and ends with these three guys and Jake. An FYI,
by the way, they are all returning next season.
Jake again played an exceptional game in goal, yeilding
to "Dreamcrusher"(or is it huggabunch?) McDonough in the fourth.
Jeffocat and Webb also had great games as well. All 5 attackmen
got considerable playing time, including Wersonske, who is
starting to play like he did last year, and both Kerr and Baker.
Irish, yet again showed poise beyond his experience with 2 goals.
The rest of line one did a great job as well, with Daulton hitting
top shelf once and Jones controlling anything within his reach.
Pritchett, Brown and Gupta also did an excellent job, as did
Arrington, Lockwood and Sample. Guillo continues to improve
rapidly as a LSM, along with the two stalwarts, Erhlich and Old
Maid Flechsig.
All the face off men were able to keep one of the best in Div. B
in check once again, and allow no goals from any of the the UTA
middies.
Overall, on the nicest fields SU has ever played on, the Bucs
started their road to Dallas and the National Championships with a
solid win against a very good, but undermanned team.
After winning the first game, the Bucs got to hang around and
watch the Div. A teams play, as well as the second Div. B semi-
final between Trinity and St. Ed's. Regardless of the winner, the
Bucs knew they were playing the last game of the season for the
LSA at 3p.m. the next day. They had hopes it would end the way the
first game of the tournament had ended.
