BUCS MOVE TO 4-0 IN CONFERENCE AGAINST RIVAL TRINITY (3/25/06)
On Saturday, the Bucs travelled down to San Antonio to take on the
undefeated Trinity Tigers on what is affectionately known as
the "postage stamp", literally a field that is 2/3 the size of a
regulation field.
Both teams had been off for Spring Break, and Trinity had been off
the field since the 18th of February. The Bucs knew Trinity had
some star players and a very solid offensive scheme, and they
did.
The Bucs came out fired up, however, and never looked back. With
more SU fans at the game than Trinity fans, the Bucs enjoyed the
great weather and a solid win to remain the only undefeated team
in LSA Div. B. With three games left before the playoffs in
conference, including one against the UTA Mavericks at home, the
Bucs know there is still work to be done.
On Saturday, however, right off the first face-off Jones picked up
the ground ball and raced down the shortened field for a rocket
shot less than 30 seconds into the game for our first goal.
By the end of one, it was 8-1, and by half-time, it was 10-1. SU
went up 11-1 before Trinity score the final two goals of the third
to make it 11-4.
SU, focusing on ball control and getting some of the other players
in, scored a couple more in the fourth as did Trinity for a final
score of 14-7.
Overall, Southwestern controlled every facet of the game. The
team showed little to no rust after the 2 week break. Once again,
our defense was spectacular with Jake also making some great
saves. Trinity did have many good shots, but either our defense
or our goalie made the plays to stifle any attempt at a comeback.
This was an unexpected and solid effort by the Bucs. Nelson
received the game ball for his unyielding defense the entire day.
We are lucky to have him and all the long poles we do on the team,
including Ehrlich and Flechsig at LSM. These guys do an excellent
job.It was also good to have Sample back after a couple of game
hiatus because of a high ankle sprain. Everybody stepped up and
played with the intensity needed.
The funniest part of the game, however, on this field, was when a
ball went out of bounds on the far sideline next to the shrubs.
Jones proceeded to literally get lost in the bushes trying to find
the ball. The only thing we could see was his shoes.
The Bucs travelled back home for a game against Baylor, a solid
Div. A team, and the renewal of a long-standing rivalry that has
seen some great matches in the past.
