SOUTHWESTERN GOES 2-0 IN CONFERENCE WITH WIN OVER KANGAROOS (2/26/06)
After a great performance that barely came up short on Saturday
against the Texas State Bobcats, the Bucs returned home to face
conference opponent Austin College.
Austin College is always a very scrappy team that simply was
outnumbered. It did not keep them from playing a strong game the
entire day however.
Freshman goalie, James McDonough got his first collegiate start at
goal and was able to hand Southwestern only its third shutout in
the 23+ year history of Southwestern Lacrosse.
Southwestern found its offensive rhythm and was able to take
command early and never look back, scoring a total of 14 points in
the first half. Austin College asked for the third to be played
running time and the Bucs agreed.
Of the 19 goals, 12 were assisted. Many players who have worked
and practiced hard since stepping foot on the campus for the team
were able to record firsts. For instance, Robert Lockwood, a
sophomore who has really stepped up his game notched two points on
the day, one goal and one assist. Both were the first of the year
and his career at SU, and well deserved.
Senior Eric Baker, attackman, journeyman, former club President,
and anything else we have needed him to be, not to mention Donut
aficionado, was able to play most of the game and score the first
goal of his career. He also received the game ball for all that
he brings to the team both on and off the field. While he often
does not go noticed with stats, etc. he provides the team with
invaluable support day in and day out. We will be sad to see him
leave at the end of this year.
All the usual suspects played solid games, and the scoring was
spread out evenly throughout the day. Many newcomers were able to
get considerable playing time and play well. Seth Boese from
Wyoming had some solid minutes, as did Jon Michael, Nick Alter,
Chris Kaufmann and Heath Thompson, who had two goals called off.
It was a game that allowed all 33 players to get some solid
playing time and help us get prepared for the biggest game of the
year next weekend. Southwestern makes the short drive down to
undefeated St. Ed's in Austin for an early leg up on playoff
standings. St. Ed's has played exceptionally well and has been
the only loss the Bucs have suffered since last year, a game at
the A&M tournament this past Fall.
We encourage ALL fans to come out and support us as we will need
to play a great game in order to come away with a win, one we want
to carry us into the long Spring Break before taking on Trinity.
