After raining all day in East Texas on Saturday, and SFA playing on their
field during the rain the day before, both teams stepped on to a sloppy,
muddy field on Sunday for a close battle. Southwestern had 15 guys
available for this game against Southern Division rival SFA, and needed all
of them to pull off the 10-8 win.
SFA jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead seconds into the game as their starting
middie won the face-off and went down the middle to score quicker than Beaty
had the day before. After the abrupt wake-up call, however, Southwestern
put in 4 quick goals and led by 1 on a hat trick in the first quarter by
Beaty. Southwestern never relinquished the lead the rest of the game,
leading 7-5 at half-time and always staying 1 goal up the entire second
half.
With just under a minute to play, and SU leading 9-8, the defense comprised
entirely of freshmen made a great stand. Matt Siekielski picked up a loose
ball and motored down the field past several defenders before making a great
pass to Jamin Welch on the crease for a goal to put the game away.
Welch received the game ball voted by the team for taking control of the
game at key moments and scoring important goals throughout the game to
maintain Southwestern's lead. Again all players did well, including Matt
Garcia filling in admirably at defense for missing Mark Riddell because of
bruised ribs.
The win put Southwestern in a tie for second place in the Southern division
of the SWLA at 2-1. Next week SU travels to College Station to play A&M,
ranked in the top 15 in the nation, and having come off very impressive wins
over nationally ranked teams early in the season.
The two win weekend was exactly what Southwestern needed to get back on
track for the season. The team will take a much deserved two week break
after the A&M game for Spring Break before coming back for its last three
games of the season.
