Southwestern swallows tough loss to Baylor (2/20/00)
Coming off a great first win of the season on Saturday, Southwestern was
poised to follow up with another win on Sunday against Baylor. Southwestern
had the opportunity to take the forfeit after Baylor showed up more than 40
minutes after the scheduled game time, but decided to play the game in front
of the family, friends, and relatives who ventured out and waited to see if
Baylor would actually show up. The game was a close one the entire day.
Southwestern traded goals with Baylor early on, and after the first quarter
lead 3-2. By half-time Baylor was up 5-3, with reinforcements arriving each
minute. Baylor started the second half with a three goal flurry, going up
8-3, before Southwestern made a great comeback. With just under 6 minutes
in the game remaining, Southwestern had run off four straight goals to pull
within one, using several of the 13 man-up situations throughout the day to
aid in the comeback.
Baylor was able to score two quick ones with less than 5 minutes left in the
game and added two final goals on fast breaks to end the game at 12-7.
Scoring was spread around the entire team for the day, with several people
scoring important goals. Jamin Welch, who only played in man-up situations
for the game because of a pulled hamstring, led the team with three goals.
While a disappointing loss, the team fought hard. Both teams had too many
penalties, and both teams had chances on open goal shots. In the end Baylor
was able to capitalize on most of their fast break opportunities, and did
not allow Southwestern to get into an offensive rhythm.
Despite falling to 1-5 for the year, the team travels to Shreveport and SFA
next weekend to play two games which the team has a good chance of winning.
The games against Baylor, Rice and UT should give the guys the experience
they need to put together an effort in both games which will place them in a
position to win.
